UUSJ 2006-2007 Accomplishments
In the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year UUSJ:
Presented two workshops at the JPD annual meeting: one led by Ed
Butterworth on Promotion of Unitarian Universalism at the DC Green
Festival and the other led by Veronica Adams and guests on the theme of
social justice and race.
Visited congregations to present our cooperative work in forums,
services, etc.
Maintained a website with information on our task forces and a calendar
of events for many social justice endeavors in the area
Increased the publication times of the UUSJ e-news highlighting
upcoming area social justice events from monthly to bimonthly.
Applied for and received a UUSC grant to hire a part-time person
facilitating Virginia UU congregations in working to defeat the proposed
state constitutional amendment regarding marriage
UUSJ Executive Director testified on health care issues before the
Maryland General Assembly.
The Freedom to Marry Task Force assisted churches in their
implementation of the most recent segments of "The Welcoming
Congregation," supported the Maryland lawsuit of same-sex couples,
supported various legislative issues affecting same-sex couples in
Maryland, and worked against the proposed amendment in Virginia
The Environmental Task Force ran a booth at the D.C. Green Festival
cooperatively with UUAHC and Ministry for Earth, led a number of workshops
in various locations, joined us with Washington Interfaith Power and
Light, worked cooperatively with Ministry for Earth and its Green
Sanctuary program, and began setting up a bulk Green buying program for
our congregations
UUSJ co-chairs worked closely with the Diversity Team of the BW Growth
Committee to increase attention to issues of race and class equity in
congregational life
UUSJ held workshops at the Maryland Baltimore Washington Growth
Committee gathering in Rockville and at the Northern Virginia UU Revival
in Fairfax
UUSJ co-sponsored with the Joseph Priestley District an anti-racism
conference, "Tools for the Journey" at the Main Line Unitarian Church, and
recruited Washington area UUs to attend
UUSJ Executive Director took part in a demonstration for the people of
Darfur.
UUSJ hosted an informal gathering and talk with Susan Leslie, UUA’s
Director of Congregational Advocacy and Witness, to learn about UUA social
justice resources
UUSJ held FOUR cluster meetings in Virginia and Maryland in late Fall
and early spring to network, follow up on earlier cluster interests,
present social justice leaders with tools for use, and to brainstorm
future cooperative ventures
UUSJ co-sponsored a Faith and Freedom anti-torture program with the
Washington Regional Religious Coalition Against Torture and Others UUSJ
served a fiscal agent and used our website to register attendees
UUSJ had a booth at General Assembly shared with Davies Memorial
Unitarian Universalist Church
