You are invited . . . to the

Covenant Group Experience

Creating Connections to
Create Relationships

Spring at Cedar Lane

Sharing  . . . Risking . . . Exploring . . . Serving . . . Growing . . . Listening

through covenant groups:

small communities in our large congregation, fostering interpersonal relationship, intellectual growth and spiritual development

Covenant Groups are guided by the mission and vision of
Cedar Lane’s Covenant Groups Steering Committee:

Mission

Grow and maintain covenant groups in which members are invited to share their spiritual journeys, matters of the heart and mind, develop caring relationships and minister to one another and the larger community.

Vision

A Cedar Lane community strengthened by small groups which create firm supportive connections among members in a safe and caring environment in the context of the Unitarian Universalist principles

What is a Covenant Group?

A small group (six to ten members) that meets regularly. While groups officially begin in the fall and end in the summer, many groups meet year-round.

Led by a trained facilitator, covenant groups include an opening ritual (usually a chalice lighting or reading) a time to check-in with one another on a personal level, discussion of a chosen topic, a time to check-out reflecting on the group experience, and a closing ritual.

Covenant Groups get their name from the practice of each group crafting a covenant - or promise - of how the members will be together with one another.

Covenant groups are expected to choose and perform at least one service project together between the fall and summer.

Why should I Join a Covenant Group?

Covenant Groups are ideal for those who...

  • Come to church to find and contribute to a community of like-minded people
  • Have trouble connecting with others in a large congregation like Cedar Lane.
  • Find meaning in sharing their thoughts and feelings and listening to the thoughts and feelings of others. (While Covenant Groups are NOT "group therapy" they are often "therapeutic.")

Where do Covenant Groups "fit in" at Cedar Lane?

Covenant Groups are coordinated by the Cedar Lane Adult Programs committee. There is a Steering Committee that guides the creation and continuation of each Covenant Group and the program-at-large. The Rev. Heather Janules and Glenis Bellais are the ministerial and staff liaisons to the Steering Committee.

How Do I Join a Covenant Group?

  • Enroll in a Covenant Group through the fall Adult programs brochure.
  • If it is past fall Adult Programs enrollment time, read the church newsletter, Cedar Lane News, to see which groups are accepting new members. When you find a group that interests you, contact Glenis Bellais at 301-493-8300 x207 or Gbellais@cedarlane.org.
