"Holy Moments" Rev. Leslie Westbrook, Ph.D. There are moments in our lives in which we know that we are experiencing something special, something meaningful, something holy. What is it about those experiences that make them holy? In recent years Unitarian Universalist churches have been officially recognizing "Community Ministers," ministers who work as pastoral counselors, chaplains, or in other fields of non-parish ministry. Cedar Lane has one community minister, Leslie Westbrook. Her work with individuals and couples as a pastoral counselor is endorsed by our church. August 3, 2008 Songs and Sayings of America's freedom struggles from an African American perspective with Chris Bell III, songster; Chris Bell Jr. narrator. A program of historical awareness and spiritual uplift in music and prose that you’ll remember for a long time. August 10, 2008 Rev. Dr. Terry Ellen Using this Joanna Macy phrase, I will address the major tasks before us in this time of climate crisis. The moral facets of moving from empire to community, is a much broader approach than adjusting our thermostats. The stakes are surely higher now than ever. Terry Ellen is Consulting Minister in Cumberland and Executive Director of UUs for Social Justice of the Baltimore, Washington, Northern Virginia Area. He is slowly learning gardening, has realized learning Arabic is more than he can handle, is preparing to teach adults about the Transcendentalists, and is sustained by his family. August 17,
2008 Deborah A. Vollmer is a member of Cedar Lane and serves on our Social Justice Council. Deborah has a B.A. in Government from Clark University and a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. She was an attorney in California for Cesar Chavez and The United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO. She has had her own law practice, concentrating on court-appointed criminal defense for low income people as well as civil litigation cases, including civil rights and environmental protection issues. In addition to working on the Congressional campaigns, Deborah is active with the Gray Panthers, health care issues, peace, local issues and many organizations. August 24, 2008 Rev. Archene Turner About 20-40% of the homeless youth in the US are lesbian, gay, bisexual &/or transgender. What might our religious response be? Archene Turner is a UU minister in preliminary fellowship and is Cedar Lane’s Coordinator of Sr. High Youth Ministry. Ms.Turner, born to Jamaican parents, spent many years in boarding school in North Wales, graduating from Meadville Lombard Theological School with a Masters of Divinity. Archene comes from a family of ministers, but found her home in Unitarian Universalism which unites her strong belief in Social Justice Activism and the need to support a community of individuals with varying theologies (recognize the Spiritual in everyone) . With a life-long history of championing equality for youth, seniors, people of color, LGBT and other less socially empowered groups through many, variety of organizations, Ms. Turner dreams of a community ministry in Unitarian Universalism. Her ambition is to build an academic boarding school, based upon our UU principles, to be inclusive, supportive, and available to children who might need it most.
