September 2016 youth trip to Camp Tockwogh
The Middle School Youth Group serves grades 6, 7 and 8. MSYG's goal is to create activities that keep our youth involved in Cedar Lane and have lots of fun in the process. And with a lot of help from many, many students, parents, and chaperones, we usually succeed.
HERE ARE SOME OF OUR ACTIVITIES FROM THIS PAST YEAR:
We enjoyed a Fall Retreat at Camp Tockwogh on Maryland's Eastern Shore--performing high ropes course, wall climbing, boating, archery, and more. We hiked Old Rag Mountain ; We took a ski Trip to Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania; We ate pizza and watched movies at the Chalice House at Cedar Lane; We skated on the outdoor ice in Silver Spring; We enjoyed the Super Bowl on the big screen at the alcohol-free party at Cedar Lane UU Church.
MANNA FOOD PACKING:
In addition to all of this fun, the Junior High Youth Group has a serious, service learning project—packing food boxes at Manna Food in Rockville. This has been a youth group responsibility for more than fifteen years and the students have met their obligation with the joy of doing an exceptionally good deed for families in need in Montgomery County. This work qualifies for service hours in the county schools. Click here for a list of recommended foods to donate on the first Sundays of each month at Cedar Lane. Bring your food items to church, and we'll get them to Manna!
WHAT WE PLAN TO DO IN THE COMING YEAR, IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE TRIPS:
Rafting on the Shenandoah River in Front Royal, VA; Weekend trip in West Virginia where we will hike in Dolly Sods and climb up Seneca Rocks; Sleep with the sharks at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
The objectives of MSYG are simple. Activities are intended to allow 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to get to know each other, advance their socializing skills, learn ethical lessons of sharing and caring for each other, perform public service for our community and church, and have fun in doing all this.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Before each event, an announcement will be mailed or emailed to the student with information about the activity. Visitors are always welcome to our activities. If you have any questions, please contact David Gosling, firstname.lastname@example.org at the church (301-493-8300 x208).
