Donations from Cedar Lane members and friends during a donation drive in December 2016.
Cedar Lane’s Refugee Support Ministry Team supports refugees who are in this country legally with official refugee status, primarily from the Middle East and also from Africa and Asia. The refugees have permission to work and some short-term governmental assistance. To achieve refugee status, the individuals and families have been in imminent danger in their home countries.
Cedar Lane’s Refugee Support Ministry Team is part of an interfaith consortium - Montgomery County Interfaith Refugee Resettlement Neighbors (MCIRRN) - of churches, mosques, and synagogues that helps newly-arrived families transition in this geographic area. Efforts include teaching English, supplying basic items, transportation, and helping connect these new neighbors with housing, employment, and other useful services. The goal of MCIRRN is to have the families they work with, achieve independence as soon as possible.
Church members and refugee families connect at tutoring sessions, welcoming events, and other times as are beneficial for the families’ needs.
To join this team, send an email to Kay Gottesman and ask to be put on the RSMT listserv.

Refugees ISO people to help with driving and tutoring.
Refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and other countries who have recently arrived and are living in the Riverdale/Hyattsville area need rides most Saturday afternoons to tutoring sessions offered in Tawes Hall on the UMD campus. The program also needs more tutors. You can be a driver, tutor, or both. An on-going commitment is needed for tutoring. To volunteer, contact Barbara Norland firstname.lastname@example.org or Patrick An email@example.com .
