FAQ about Sundays

Stew Grubman Jazmine Steele and

When are your services?

We have one service at 10 a.m. from May - September 3. Check our worship page for Sunday service information.

Where are you located?

Our address is 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda MD 20814. For directions, go to: www.cedarlane.org/directions.html

How Long is Worship?

About one hour.

What can I expect the first time I visit?

We have parking for visitors and guests in our main lot. Our Welcome Center is in the vestibule outside the main entrance to the sanctuary/auditorium. Our Welcoming and Membership Director, Jazmine Steele, or one or our Welcome Center Volunteers will greet you and offer you a name tag for the morning. Sit wherever you'd like for the service.

WHAT GOES ON DURING THE WORSHIP SERVICES?

Unitarian Universalism's roots are in the radical branches of the Protestant Reformation. Reflecting this heritage, our services are similar in form to Protestant worship and are about an hour in length. They include lively music, hymns, readings, silence for meditation and a sermon. Here is a typical Order of Service if you are curious.

What's it sound like?

Get a feel for our Sunday morning worship and music styles by visiting our YouTube page.

What's the dress code?

You'll see a wide range of attire: people in dresses and sport coats, some in jeans, while others wear the bicycle shorts they cycled to Cedar Lane in. In brief, we invite you to dress comfortably in your own style. Children will be fine in comfortable clothing such as sneakers and jeans.

WHAT DO CHILDREN DO DURING THE SERVICE?

From the second Sunday in September - the end of April we offer religious education classes during the worship hour. These classes are age-specific and a great way to meet and make new friends. Simply come to the downstairs lobby, where you will be greeted by friendly folk ready to assist you.  Babies and children are also always welcome in worship if you would like them to stay with you!  From May - September we offer childcare during worship for children 5 and under.  Children that are older than 5 stay with their families during worship.

IS THERE A PLACE WHERE I MAY TAKE MY CHILD TO COMFORT HER AND STILL EXPERIENCE THE SERVICE?

We have a rocking chair in our library if you would like a quiet place to be with your child. On Sundays, the library is an extension of our worship space so you may continue to listen to the worship service over the speaker system if for any reason you leave the sanctuary.

Is your church accessible to people in wheelchairs?

Yes. The most convenient access to the main building where worship services are held is to double park near the main entrance (courtyard on your right) to set up the wheelchair, and then follow the straight walkway to the double-door main entrance.

Do you have hearing assistance?

Yes, we have wireless assistive listening devices to amplify the worship service. We have a telecoil system for hearing aids that can use it, and wireless headsets as well. The sanctuary and the chapel have hearing assistance devices, the sanctuary has a t-coil system and headsets.

How do I become a member?

Once you become comfortable with us, we ask you to attend a Membership Orientation and have a one-on-one with one of our ministers. Then, if you decide to join Cedar Lane, you sign the membership book and promise to attend services regularly, serve the congregation, connect with others in the congregation and pledge financially as you are able. Please contact Roger Santodomingo, Membership Coordinator, rsantodomingo@cedarlane.org
