On Sunday, August 12 at 12 pm at Freedom Plaza in D.C., UUs are asked to attend the Still Here, Still Strong Rally, as participants in the Shut it Down DC - Hate Not Welcome: No Unite The Right 2 counter protest at Freedom Plaza at 2 pm.
Date: Sunday, August 12
Rally: Still Here, Still Strong: Rally at Freedom Plaza
Time: 12 - 3 pm, rally
Location: Freedom Plaza, 14th & Pennsylvania, NW
One year after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA, white nationalists are bringing the same hate to DC. Countering that message, Shut it Down DC, a coalition that centers the voices of leaders of color and other vulnerable identities, is organizing a rally in Freedom Plaza at 12 pm to celebrate the resilience and resistance of marginalized communities. An All Souls Unitarian member who was injured in Charlottesville will speak at the rally.
Details for the Still Here, Still Strong: Rally may change—updated information can be found at the organizing coalition’s website Shut it Down DC, or the Facebook event page Hate Not Welcome: No Unite The Right 2.
The rally is planned to be a positive and non-confrontational event. With safety in mind, “Still Here, Still Strong” is scheduled to end before the white nationalists are expected to be in the streets. A safety plan is advised for those who wish to re-assemble at Lafayette Square after the “Still Here, Still Strong” rally to more directly counter the white nationalists who will be demonstrating there.
You can donate rally provisions at All Souls this week. Items needed include water, sunscreen, first aid supplies, and non-perishable snacks. For more info on rally or donations, contact Constance Young (email@example.com) or Rev. Parker (firstname.lastname@example.org).
