CEDAR LANE VOICES ON MULTICULTURAL, PLURALISTIC SPIRITUALITY
Jasmin, an 11-year old US Citizen, just wants to be able to greet her mother every day. She might not get that wish this Christmas because on December 22nd, her mother’s protected status ends. Rev. Abhi took video of Jasmin’s testimony at the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and TPS (Temporary Protection Status) Rally on December 6th, 2017. You can view it here: https://www.facebook.com/ajanamanchi/videos/2259124984113167/. Jasmin wasn’t the only testimony offered. When DACA ends, more than 700,000 students will lose protections. Some families have already lost their TPS status.
More than 30 Cedar Laners boarded a bus provided by Casa de Maryland, rode in cars and took the Metro to join thousands at the Capitol building on December 6, 2017, to support families like Jasmin’s who are being torn apart by unfair immigration policies. More 250 people participated in an act of civil disobedience, including Representative Luis Gutiérrez of Illinois, Senator Kamala Harris of California and Representative Judy Chu of California.
As a Sanctuary Congregation, part of our work includes showing up on the streets, at rallys and actions to help change policies related to immigration. If you are interested in doing more immigration justice work please contact Dianne Seiffert, Team Lead for Immigration Justice.
