The Alliance

Each month (except July and August), we host a luncheon where participants come together over good food, engage in lively conversation, build relationships, and learn from one another and a stimulating guest speaker. Donations collected at the luncheons let us support relevant charities that help others in our community. We also help build connections in the Cedar Lane community through a book club, a weekly bridge group, and the monthly Alliance Newsletter. We raise money by collecting and selling used books and jewelry; this helps us contribute to Cedar Lane’s operating budget, the minister’s discretionary fund, and other charities. We also support families of deceased Cedar Lane members by helping organize receptions following memorial services. Involvement Opportunities Raise Money for Worthy Causes Memorial Service Support

Hospitality Team

The Hospitality Team welcomes people to worship service on Sunday mornings as greeters and serves as ushers during service. Volunteers make, set up, and put away items from coffee hour. We always need new volunteers on this team, many serve only 1-2 hours per month.

Rental Hospitality Team

A growing number of community organizations and businesses are hosting their events and programs at Cedar Lane. The Rental Hospitality Team is there for the folks who rent Cedar Lane’s facilities for their events and programming. We manage the process of engaging and booking organizations and individuals who want to rent Cedar Lane facilities and provide hosts during rental events. Hosts are available onsite ,while the facility is being rented, to answer questions and accommodate the needs of the caterers, family members, or community and organizational leaders using the space. Membership Engagement Team

The Membership Engagement Team welcomes newcomers and helps them find their way into connected engagement and support at Cedar Lane. The team also helps support members as they continue along the spectrum of faithful engagement to ensure that they are growing in ways that give them life.

Library Team

The Library Team keeps the books in order and retire outdated books and rotates new books in.

LGBTQ+ and Gender Justice

The LGBTQ+ and Gender Justice Ministry Team challenges harmful, unfair, and limiting stereotypes based on gender.

Internship Team

Ministerial candidates must serve as intern ministers in our congregations and communities as part of their formation process, typically while they are still in seminary. The Internship Team supports the work of our intern minister program.

Grounds Team

The grounds team helps keep our campus beautiful and clean! They help with watering plants and flowers, raking up leaves, adding mulch, etc. Each year we hold two clean-up days (one in the spring, one in the fall) inviting the larger Cedar Lane community to help with major campus clean-ups and beautification. These events are family-friendly. The team meets once a month on Saturday mornings.

Generosity Team

The generosity team is responsible for conducting the annual campaign for pledges to support Cedar Lane’s operating budget. Nearly 70% of the funds that pay for worship, pastoral care, religious education, social justice, and our buildings and grounds come from annual pledges. We work closely with the ministers and staff to develop creative and inspiring ways to encourage congregants to reflect on what Cedar Lane means to them, and to deepen their relationships with each other and our faith community. We do this through conversations, testimonials, letters, electronic messaging, social media, and events, as well as any other means developed by team members.  Team member responsibilities include writing letters, sending mailings, releasing emails, and helping at the table after service during the campaign. The team also works with the ministers to sign up members to give testimonials during services and to coordinate a thank-you event at the culmination of the campaign. Members help manage caterers and clean up at any campaign events. They also speak at new member events as appropriate and explain the importance of pledging. And the team is responsible for scheduling all the activities so that we can budget in time for the following year. Involvement Opportunities

Flower Team

The Flower Team provides decorative beauty and the spirituality of nature for Sunday services, via floral arrangements. We take turns creating these each week and help each other out, as needed. We meet monthly via Zoom, and a few Saturdays a year we gather in the library for a lunch potluck and arrangement schedule sign-up. (The food is delicious.) We always welcome new members. If you have been admiring the flowers you see on Sunday and would like to learn more about being a part of our team, please get in touch!

Sliding Scale Guide

We know it can be complicated to decide how much to pay, and there’s no one right answer for anyone. Many thanks to UU@UN for providing an equitable model for payments.

Consider paying at a lower tier if many of these are true for you:

  • I am directly affected by environmental racism.
  • I have immigration-related expenses.
  • I’m supporting children or have other dependents.
  • I have significant debt.
  • I have medical expenses not covered by insurance.
  • I receive public assistance.
  • I am an elder with limited financial support.
  • I am an unpaid community organizer.
  • I have been denied work due to incarceration history.
  • I would need to budget in order to afford a $25 expense.

Consider paying at a higher tier if multiple of these are true for you:

  • I or my family owns the home I live in.
  • I have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money.
  • I can travel recreationally.
  • I have access to family money and resources in times of need.
  • I work part time by choice.
  • I have a relatively high degree of earning power due to level of education, gender and racial privilege, class background, etc.
  • In terms of its impact on my lifestyle (e.g. my ability to pay this month’s bills), $50 means functionally about the same as $15. My bank account would look pretty much the same either way.

A reflection from Pronoia Coaching:

When I pay more, I know that I am helping others to access the event.

When I pay in the middle, I know I am helping the organizers cover costs.

And when I pay less, I know I am letting my community hold me and support me.

All of these are wonderful and acceptable ways of participating.
