We are members of the Cedar Lane community who enjoy music, have had some musical experiences at some point in our lives (including singing in the shower!), and who have a desire to share their talents (musical, organizational, or otherwise) with the congregation. Our Music Ministry Team consists of: Liz Peters, Leslie Backus, Tina Borror, and Abhi Janamanchi, minister. Our staff includes: Michael Holmes (Music Director), Dr. Jasmin Lee (pianist/organist), Jenny Crane (Youth and children’s music coordinator), plus four paid soloists/section leaders.
We use our voices, our instruments, and our love of music to enhance Cedar Lane’s community life. We sing, ring, play piano, guitar, percussion, hammer dulcimer, and other instruments, plan services and concerts, and reach out to those in need of healing.
Engagement Opportunities
Adult Choir – sings in Sunday services 2-3 times per month, rehearses on Wednesdays, 7:30 – 9:30 PM. There is also a pickup choir in the summer that sings about once a month and rehearses just prior to the service.
Youth Choir – for high school age youth. Most weeks we rehearse on Sunday evening during the youth group gathering, which starts at 5:30 in the family lounge. To include everyone, we have some ad hoc rehearsals at other times. The youth choir sings in service several times per year. We also work on music for other events at CLUUC including youth led variety shows and religious education events. Youth ages 16 and up are also welcome to sing in the adult choir.
Children’s Choir – For ages 5 - 13. We rehearse on Sunday morning in the Chapel from 9:30 - 10:15. We sing in service about once per month, plus Christmas Eve and the Flower Sunday in June.
The youth and children’s choirs do not require any previous experience or the ability to read music, and we aim for it to be accessible to all who want to sing.
Bell Choir – A three+ octave choir for people who can read music. Currently our only bell choir, we emphasize proper ringing techniques and good musicianship. We ring in services throughout the year, rehearsing Thursdays 7:00 – 8:30 PM.
Healing Choir – On hiatus. In the past, groups of us would visit those who are ailing and sing selections from our hymnals. With interest we could revive the practice.
Music Ministry Team – Members have a special interest in music and would like to be part of a team that works with the Director of Music to envision the potential of the program.
Concert Committee – Works with the Director of Music to evaluate and select artists for the Concert Series at Cedar Lane (historically, four to six concerts are staged between September and June.) We strive to include committee members with disparate musical preferences and an awareness/ knowledge of local artistic talent.
