Join Rev. Abhi Janamanchi on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 AM Eastern / 7:30 PM India Standard Time on Zoom for a conversation with acclaimed Indian musician, activist, author, and public intellectual T.M. Krishna.

One of India’s leading Carnatic vocalists and a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Krishna has spent much of his life both immersed in a classical tradition and questioning the social structures around it. On the concert stage and beyond it, he has challenged barriers of caste, class, and gender in the arts and has become an outspoken voice on culture, equality, secularism, and democracy.

His new book, We, The People of India: Decoding a Nation’s Symbols, looks at things deeply familiar to generations of Indians: the national flag, anthem, emblem, motto, and the Preamble to the Constitution. Krishna goes back to the debates, disagreements, and hopes that shaped these symbols and asks what they tell us about the idea of India and its democracy today.

Abhi and Krishna will talk about the book, the idea of India, music and public life, and what it means to be an artist and citizen in a democracy under strain.
